Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, March 28, 2026, for a “No Kings” rally that organizers framed as opposition to Trump administration policies.

The daytime march began peacefully from Gloria Molina Grand Park near LA City Hall, with crowds chanting slogans like “ICE out of LA” and “This is what democracy looks like” as they moved along Spring Street.

By late afternoon, however, a smaller group of roughly 150 to 200 agitators remained near the Metropolitan Detention Center and Roybal Federal Building after the main rally had concluded.

Tensions escalated as these individuals began clashing with law enforcement, turning what had been a largely orderly demonstration into a scene of chaos.

Federal officers from the Department of Homeland Security faced direct assaults, with protesters hurling chunks of concrete, rocks, bottles, and other objects at them.

At least two DHS officers were struck by concrete blocks and required medical treatment for their injuries.

Video footage captured agitators kicking fences around the federal facility and even picking up tear gas canisters to throw back at officers.

Some protesters arrived prepared, wearing shields, gas masks, and other protective gear as they confronted law enforcement lines.

Vandalism added to the disorder, with one masked demonstrator spray-painting the threatening message “Kill Your Local ICE Agent” on walls near the detention center.

Additional obscene graffiti criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement appeared on nearby structures during the unrest.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded swiftly, issuing repeated dispersal orders as the situation deteriorated.

LAPD declared an unlawful assembly and activated a citywide tactical alert to manage the escalating violence.

Officers deployed crowd-control measures including tear gas, pepper balls, bean bag rounds, and mounted units to clear the area.

Skirmish lines formed as authorities moved in to enforce compliance near Alameda Street between Temple and Aliso streets.

By early evening, the LAPD had lifted the tactical alert after most agitators were either arrested or had finally dispersed.

On Sunday, March 30, authorities confirmed a total of 75 arrests stemming from the clashes.

Of those detained, 66 were adults primarily charged with failure to disperse.

Eight or nine juveniles were also among those arrested for the same violation.

One additional suspect faced charges for possession of a dirk or dagger after being taken into custody.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that federal prosecutors would pursue felony charges against those who assaulted officers, citing clear video evidence.

Essayli personally highlighted the “Kill Your Local ICE Agent” graffiti as a federal crime in a public statement.

One notable arrest involved a protester dressed as the Statue of Liberty who was detained amid the chaos.

Conservative observers noted that while the initial rally drew large crowds, a determined core of agitators hijacked the event with premeditated violence.

The incident occurred as part of a nationwide wave of “No Kings” demonstrations, with organizers claiming millions participated across more than 3,300 events in the U.S. and Europe.

Los Angeles authorities emphasized that the vast majority of Saturday’s participants had left peacefully before the evening violence erupted.

Federal officials warned that video from the scene would be used to identify and prosecute additional offenders.

The Metropolitan Detention Center has been a repeated flashpoint for protests since the Trump administration intensified immigration enforcement efforts.

Local and federal leaders condemned the attacks on officers, stressing that such behavior undermines legitimate First Amendment expression.

Wild videos circulating online showed agitators using brutal tactics against law enforcement during the standoff.

Police reports confirmed no serious injuries among the arrested protesters, though one activist group later claimed a teenager sustained a broken shin during an arrest
