Trump signed an executive order on January 14, 2026, suspending visa processing for citizens of 75 countries identified as having deficient screening capabilities, high visa overstay rates, or links to terrorism and organized crime. The list includes nations across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America, with some of the largest sources of illegal immigration and visa fraud now completely cut off from new nonimmigrant and immigrant visa issuance until enhanced vetting standards are met.The administration cited national security, public safety, and integrity of the immigration system as the reasons for the unprecedented action. U.S. embassies and consulates in the affected countries have been instructed to cease routine visa interviews and adjudications, with limited exceptions only for immediate family members of U.S. citizens, certain diplomatic cases, and urgent medical situations. Existing visa holders from the listed countries are not affected unless their status is individually revoked following additional review.The order builds on Trump’s earlier travel restrictions and expands them dramatically, reflecting his campaign promises to restore rigorous screening after what he called the “Biden open-border disaster.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the move was necessary to prevent exploitation of the visa system by criminal networks, terrorists, and individuals who intend to overstay or disappear into the interior of the United States.The suspension is expected to dramatically reduce new visa issuance in the short term and force affected countries to improve cooperation on identity verification, criminal record sharing, and repatriation of their nationals. The White House emphasized that the policy is temporary and reviewable, with countries able to regain visa processing eligibility by meeting strict security benchmarks.
