For months, American families have been absorbing the brutal economic consequences of a Middle Eastern conflict that sent energy prices spiraling to their highest levels in years. The worst, it appears, may finally be passing—and the credit belongs squarely to President Trump’s relentless diplomatic pressure.

West Texas Intermediate crude briefly fell below $90 a barrel this week for the first time in nearly three weeks, as markets responded to increasingly credible signals that the United States and Iran are nearing an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—the narrow waterway that carries roughly 20% of the world’s daily oil supply and whose effective closure since the outbreak of hostilities in late February has been the single greatest driver of energy market chaos in 2026.

The immediate catalyst for Tuesday’s price drop was a Truth Social post from President Trump himself, stating that negotiations with Iran over an interim deal to extend their ceasefire and reopen the Strait were “proceeding nicely.” Markets, which have been acutely sensitive to every headline from the region for months, responded immediately.

Brent crude fell nearly four dollars in a single session, trading at $96.28 per barrel by Wednesday morning.

To understand what a relief that represents, one must recall what the energy market looked like just weeks ago. On April 7th, Brent crude hit a jaw-dropping $138 per barrel — one of the highest prices ever recorded — after the de facto closure of Hormuz triggered a supply shock of historic proportions. Goldman Sachs, in the depths of the crisis, had warned that those elevated prices could last through 2027.

J.P. Morgan warned that gasoline could top $5 a gallon at American pumps. S&P Global Energy estimated that more than 1.2 billion barrels of oil had been derailed since the conflict began, with the tally rising each day the strait remained largely closed.

The consequences for American consumers were immediate and painful. Gas prices surged from roughly $2.98 per gallon before the war began to a national average of $4.14 per gallon at the worst point of the crisis — nearly a $1.20-per-gallon increase that hit working-class households hardest.

Diesel, used to move virtually everything in the American economy, approached its all-time high. J.P. Morgan analysts calculated that the price surge, if sustained for the full year, would amount to a roughly $100 billion hit to American consumers’ purchasing power—effectively wiping out the larger tax refunds many families were counting on after passage of the Republican tax bill.

The origins of the crisis trace back to the start of the U.S.-Iran conflict in late February 2026. As hostilities escalated, Iran moved to weaponize its geographic advantage over the Strait—through which approximately 14 million barrels of oil flowed daily before the conflict—effectively holding the global energy supply hostage.

As of mid-May, the conflict was blocking the flow of roughly that full daily volume, creating a supply disruption with no modern peacetime parallel.

Trump responded with characteristic aggression and urgency. At various points during the crisis, the president issued firm deadlines to Tehran, threatened to obliterate Iranian power plants if the Strait was not reopened, and simultaneously extended olive branches when diplomatic momentum warranted it.

Iran at one point allowed ten oil tankers to pass through the waterway as what Trump described as “a present” to the United States—a gesture the President accepted while continuing negotiations.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates stepped up their use of overland pipeline infrastructure that bypasses the Strait entirely, doing what they could to offset the supply disruption.

But those volumes, while helpful, cannot come close to replacing 14 million barrels per day of blocked ocean traffic. The fundamental math of the crisis—as one analyst bluntly put it—cannot be solved by pipelines alone.

The prospect of a deal has already triggered a meaningful reversal in price trajectory. From the April peak of $138 per barrel, Brent had already fallen to $100.20 as recently as May 26th before Tuesday’s further drop below $97.

The Energy Information Administration now projects crude falling to an average of $89 per barrel by the fourth quarter of 2026 and $79 per barrel in 2027 — assuming the diplomatic breakthrough holds and Hormuz traffic normalizes.

Even with progress, energy analysts are urging caution about the pace of recovery. Even in the best-case scenario where a deal is signed and the strait reopens, serious and lasting damage to the global energy system has already been done.

Reopening the strait physically takes time — shippers must regain confidence in safe passage before large-scale crude transport resumes — and some Asian markets with acute fuel needs are weeks away by sea from the Gulf region.

The structural tightening of the global oil market, analysts say, is “baked in the cake” regardless of the diplomatic outcome.

Nevertheless, the directional trend is undeniable, and the credit for it is clear.

The Trump administration drove the diplomatic engagement that produced the ceasefire, maintained pressure through a combination of threatened military action and sustained negotiations, and has now brought the world to the doorstep of a deal that could restore the flow of roughly one-fifth of the planet’s daily oil supply.

For American families who have been paying $4-plus at the pump every time they fill their tanks, that is not an abstraction. It is real relief—and it is arriving on the President’s watch.

American domestic oil production has provided a meaningful buffer throughout the crisis. The EIA had projected output near 13.6 million barrels per day — an all-time record — heading into 2026, driven by continued advances in domestic well productivity.

That production base, the direct result of years of energy dominance policy championed by Republicans, has prevented the Hormuz crisis from becoming even worse than it was.

As prices continue their descent and diplomacy nears completion, the narrative the left attempted to construct — that the Trump administration’s Iran policy was reckless, destabilizing, and economically self-defeating — is collapsing under the weight of the results.

Gas prices are falling. A deal is approaching. And the man the media spent months accusing of stumbling into an unwinnable war is on the verge of delivering the energy market relief that Americans have been waiting for since February.
