The Trump administration has cut more than 600 federal rules and regulations in the past year while introducing only five new ones, marking one of the most aggressive deregulatory campaigns in modern U.S. history. According to figures obtained by Fox News Digital, the administration’s actions have resulted in 646 deregulatory measures during the current fiscal year alone.

President Donald Trump moved swiftly after taking office to advance his deregulation agenda. In January, he signed an executive order directing federal agencies to eliminate ten regulations for every new rule implemented. The directive was designed to counter what administration officials described as a surge of new regulations during former President Joe Biden’s term, when hundreds of new rules were introduced annually.

Details & Background

As part of the initiative, federal agencies submitted more than 1,300 proposals to the Office of Management and Budget’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in 2025. After review, 646 deregulatory actions were finalized this fiscal year, according to the Office of Management and Budget.

Altogether, the administration reports that these deregulatory efforts have produced $211.8 billion in net cost savings in fiscal year 2025. That figure translates to more than $600 per American, according to OMB calculations. The savings stem from repealed compliance requirements, streamlined permitting processes, and eliminated reporting mandates affecting industries ranging from energy to manufacturing.

The White House has also highlighted additional savings achieved through cuts to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives during the administration’s first 100 days, underscoring a broader push to reduce federal spending and regulatory oversight.

Reactions

Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought praised the scope of the effort in a statement to Fox News Digital. “The Trump Administration’s deregulatory agenda is the most ambitious in American history,” Vought said. “We have blown far past the target 10 to 1 deregulatory ratio in President Trump’s Executive Order, saving hundreds of billions for the American people.”

Vought also emphasized the pace of progress compared to previous efforts. “In less than one year we have already achieved more savings than in all four years of the prior Trump Administration, and we’re just getting started,” he said. Supporters argue that the reductions remove unnecessary barriers to economic growth, while critics contend that some regulations serve critical public safety and environmental functions.

Why This Matters to You

Federal regulations influence nearly every sector of the economy, affecting energy prices, job creation, healthcare compliance, and small business operations. Reducing regulatory burdens can lower costs for businesses, which administration officials argue ultimately benefits consumers through lower prices and expanded economic opportunity.

The government’s role in shaping economic policy remains central to the national debate. By aggressively pursuing deregulation, the Trump administration has signaled a commitment to shrinking federal oversight and prioritizing cost savings. Whether this approach continues at its current pace or faces resistance in Congress and the courts, its impact on economic growth and household finances will remain a defining issue for American families in the months ahead.
