The U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense on Sunday successfully transported a small nuclear reactor aboard a C-17 cargo aircraft from California to Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The operation marked the first time a microreactor has been airlifted in this manner, demonstrating the potential to rapidly deploy nuclear power assets where they are needed most.
The agencies partnered with California-based Valar Atomics to transport one of the company’s Ward microreactors — without nuclear fuel — for testing and demonstration purposes. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael Duffey accompanied the reactor and its components on the flight. Duffey described the milestone as a critical step forward. “This gets us closer to deploy nuclear power when and where it is needed to give our nation’s warfighters the tools to win in battle,” he said.

Details & Background
The Trump administration has identified small nuclear reactors as a key component of expanding U.S. energy production. President Donald Trump previously issued four executive orders aimed at boosting domestic nuclear deployment to meet growing national security demands and rising energy needs driven by advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence.
In December, the Energy Department issued two grants to accelerate the development of small modular reactors. Microreactors, like the Ward model transported Sunday, are designed to be compact and transportable. Slightly larger than a minivan, the reactor can ultimately generate up to 5 megawatts of electricity — enough to power approximately 5,000 homes, according to Valar Atomics CEO Isaiah Taylor.
The reactor will begin operating at 100 kilowatts and peak at 250 kilowatts this year before gradually ramping up to full capacity. The Energy Department plans to have three microreactors reach “criticality” — the point at which a nuclear reaction sustains itself — by July 4, Wright stated. Fuel for the reactor will be transported from the Nevada National Security site to the San Rafael facility.
Reactions
Supporters argue that microreactors offer strategic advantages, particularly for military bases in remote locations that currently rely on diesel generators requiring frequent fuel deliveries. Rapid deployment capability could enhance operational resilience in conflict zones or disaster-stricken areas where traditional infrastructure is unavailable.
Energy Secretary Wright acknowledged ongoing discussions with states, including Utah, about hosting facilities capable of reprocessing fuel or handling permanent disposal. While private companies fund much of the technological development, Taylor emphasized that federal action remains essential. “Doing some enabling actions to allow fuel fabrication here and uranium enrichment here,” he said, is necessary for long-term industry success.
Why This Matters to You
Energy security underpins national security. The ability to rapidly deploy compact nuclear power systems could transform how the United States supports military operations and emergency response efforts. For communities near remote bases or disaster-prone regions, microreactors may offer stable, resilient power where traditional grids are vulnerable.
At the same time, cost concerns and waste disposal challenges highlight the complexities of expanding nuclear technology. The federal government’s role in regulation, fuel supply, and long-term storage solutions will shape whether microreactors become a viable component of America’s broader energy strategy.
The administration’s push signals a commitment to strengthening domestic energy capacity while reducing dependence on foreign sources. As global competition intensifies and energy demands grow, the development of advanced nuclear systems represents both an opportunity and a test of America’s technological leadership.
With deployment milestones approaching, the next phase will determine whether microreactors become a cornerstone of future power generation — both for the battlefield and the homeland.
