And he was a man with a documented, sustained, and in some respects genuinely mysterious obsession with the cutting edge of human scientific inquiry, including the fields that sit at the intersection of advanced physics, artificial intelligence, consciousness studies, and the kind of research that the mainstream scientific establishment has historically treated as fringe: research into anomalous phenomena, non-standard theories of mind, and the technological implications of ideas that the academic establishment found too speculative to fund through conventional channels.

The Epstein files, released in successive tranches by the Department of Justice beginning in 2025, have revealed deeper ties between Epstein and the scientific community than previously known.

Documents show researchers consulting the financier on publications, visas, and more, with the latest batch adding significantly to the picture of how systematically Epstein inserted himself into the scientific world.

The picture that emerges from those documents is of a man who did not merely give money to scientists.

He cultivated them, maintained relationships with them over years, sought their company and their conversation, and used his financial resources to position himself as a patron and gatekeeper in fields where conventional funding was scarce and unconventional ideas were welcome.

Epstein told Science magazine in 2017: “As you might know, I was very close to Marvin Minsky for quite a long time and I funded some of Marvin’s projects.”

Minsky, one of the founders of artificial intelligence and a co-founder of MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, was a central figure in Epstein’s scientific network.

Minsky’s foundational work in AI, his theories of the mind, and his intellectual expansiveness made him precisely the kind of figure Epstein sought out: a scientist with credibility in conventional circles who was also willing to think beyond the boundaries of established consensus.

In 2002, Epstein hosted what has been called the “St. Thomas Common Sense Symposium” on his private island in the Virgin Islands, an AI summit that brought together Marvin Minsky, Pushpinder Singh, Roger Schank, Doug Lenat, and Vernor Vinge to explore the future of human-like intelligence.

After the symposium, Minsky, Singh, and philosopher Aaron Sloman published an article about the group’s ideas.

In a tiny paragraph of acknowledgment, the authors note: “This meeting was made possible thanks to the generous support of Jeffrey Epstein.”

The publication of that acknowledgment in an academic paper provides a documentary thread connecting Epstein’s patronage to the formal scientific record, one that the researchers presumably saw no reason to hide at the time and that now reads as something considerably more troubling given everything the subsequent years have revealed.

Epstein described how he distributed his money and what he looked for in scientists.

He said he usually gave out his money anonymously because he had no interest in publicity and because he understood that his notoriety might be a burden to grantees.

“It’s not really a secret, but it’s private,” he explained.

He described meeting Roger Penrose, the distinguished theoretical physicist, and hearing about an Indian woman physicist who had come up with an idea of using a Bose-Einstein condensate to find gravitational waves, and then pursuing that lead.

The intellectual range of Epstein’s scientific interests was genuinely broad.

He was interested in AI, in physics at the boundary of quantum mechanics and gravity, in theories of consciousness, and in the kinds of interdisciplinary questions that sit at the edge of what established scientific funding mechanisms will support.

That breadth was not accidental.

It was strategic, designed to maximize his access to the most interesting and potentially most consequential scientific thinking being done outside the mainstream.

The connection between Epstein’s scientific network and the emerging disclosure landscape around unidentified anomalous phenomena is not a direct one, but it is a real one, and the Epstein files’ release has made it impossible to ignore entirely.

Research into Epstein’s connections has drawn attention to questions about whether his funding of AI research at MIT and elsewhere had alternative agendas tied to classified projects, intelligence networks, or corporate interests, given that MIT alongside Harvard, Cornell University and others conduct classified research on behalf of the Pentagon, CIA, NSA, and DARPA.

Whether those questions are answerable or even framed correctly is uncertain.

What is not uncertain is that Epstein positioned himself at the intersection of private scientific patronage, classified research institutions, and the social networks of people who work at the boundary between academic science and government-funded advanced research.

The broader context of Epstein’s scientific network intersects with another alarming development in 2026: at least ten or eleven scientists connected to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Air Force Research Laboratory have died or disappeared since 2023, a pattern that triggered a federal investigation and drew the attention of President Trump himself, who vowed to look into the missing and dead scientists.

Whether those disappearances and deaths are connected to each other, to Epstein’s network, or to the classified research programs at those institutions is precisely what federal investigators are working to determine.

The pattern, if it is a pattern rather than a statistical artifact, suggests that people with access to sensitive advanced research are dying or vanishing at a rate that cannot be explained entirely by ordinary causes.

Among those cited in connection with the cases is retired Air Force Major General William Neil McCasland, who commanded the Air Force Research Laboratory, which has been identified as a key institution in congressional UAP investigations.

McCasland went missing in February 2026 and has not been located as of this writing.

The Air Force Research Laboratory’s role in advanced propulsion, materials science, and exotic physics research makes it one of the institutions most likely to have genuine information about the programs that congressional investigators and UAP disclosure advocates are pressing the government to reveal.

The disappearance of a former AFRL commander in the middle of the most sustained congressional UAP investigation in American history is not a coincidence that responsible observers can simply set aside.

The thread connecting Epstein to the fringe technology world is not just about AI funding.

Epstein was known to be fascinated by theories of consciousness that overlapped with the quantum mechanics approaches pursued by Roger Penrose and others, approaches that are considered unorthodox in mainstream neuroscience and physics but that have attracted serious thinkers for decades.

He was interested in cryonics and transhumanism, in the possibility of uploading human consciousness, and in the broader question of what happens when biological intelligence merges with or is supplanted by artificial intelligence.

These are not fringe concerns in the conspiracy theory sense.

They are genuine scientific questions at the frontier of human knowledge, and they attract both serious researchers and the kind of wealthy eccentric patrons who are willing to fund work that universities and government agencies will not.

The Epstein files and their connection to UAP disclosure came into sharp focus when the Epstein contact book and flight logs began revealing the names of scientists who had also been identified in connection with advanced technology research that may intersect with government UAP programs.

A source who had been talking about Jeffrey Epstein drew the attention of investigative journalists to the deaths and disappearances of scientists connected to institutions like JPL and Los Alamos, with the connection between the two threads suggesting to some researchers that there may be an overlapping network of individuals with access to classified advanced research who were also known to Epstein’s circle.

The caution required in discussing these connections is genuine and important.

The Epstein files document a man who courted scientists systematically as part of a broader social strategy that also included the trafficking and abuse of young women.

The scientists who accepted his patronage did so in most cases without knowledge of the full scope of his crimes, and the documentation of professional relationships in his contact books does not establish complicity in those crimes.

At the same time, the question of whether Epstein’s scientific network was connected to anything beyond what it appears on the surface is a legitimate investigative question that the disclosure of his files has made unavoidable.

What the Epstein story and the UAP disclosure movement share is a common thread: the possibility that significant things have been happening in the classified and semi-classified spaces of American advanced research that the public has not been told about, that the people who know about them are under institutional and sometimes legal pressure not to discuss them, and that the deaths and disappearances of people with access to that knowledge may not be entirely unrelated to what they knew.

Whether those possibilities resolve into something documented and prosecutable or fade into the background noise of coincidence and conspiracy theory is a question that only continued investigation can answer.

Jessica Reed Kraus, an independent journalist who was present at the White House during the first release of Epstein files, described the connection between her Epstein sources and the UAP story: a source who had been talking to her about Jeffrey Epstein drew her attention to the death of MIT plasma scientist Nuno Loureiro and the shooting of another researcher, and she “jumped on it immediately, because I knew there was something to this.”

Her sources, she said, “are usually right about everything.”
