Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., told Newsmax that what he describes as the growing “Islamification” of America represents a danger to the public, arguing that certain religious and political ideologies are incompatible with the country’s tradition of individual freedom. Asked about the influence of Islam in the United States, Fine said, “It’s dangerous for all of us,” before contrasting his view of Jewish and Christian religious practice with what he characterized as attitudes found among many Muslims.

Fine said his concern centers on whether religious beliefs remain personal or are imposed on others. Discussing his own Jewish faith, he offered an analogy: “I’m Jewish, I don’t eat pork, but I don’t expect the supermarket not to sell it.” Fine said he views that distinction as central to the debate over what he calls “Islamification.” His statements represent his characterization of Islam and should not be read as establishing that Muslims generally seek to impose religious practices on other Americans.

Details & Background

Fine also praised Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for state action aimed at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, commonly known as CAIR. DeSantis issued an executive order designating CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organizations for purposes of Florida executive action and directing state agencies to deny specified forms of public support where legally permitted. Fine told Newsmax that the action followed efforts he had previously supported while serving in the Florida Legislature.

At the federal level, Fine has also introduced legislation directing the secretary of state to examine whether CAIR satisfies the legal criteria for designation as a foreign terrorist organization. Newsmax reported that the proposal remained in the House Judiciary Committee. Separately, President Donald Trump directed federal officials to review whether certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters or subdivisions should receive federal terrorist designations, a process distinct from Florida’s treatment of CAIR.

Reactions

Fine was unequivocal about CAIR during his Newsmax appearance. “CAIR is unquestionably a terrorist organization,” he said, adding that he believes the group should be shut down nationally and investigated at both the state and federal levels. That description is Fine’s assertion rather than a current federal terrorist designation of CAIR. CAIR describes itself as a Muslim civil-rights and advocacy organization and has strongly disputed Florida’s accusations.

The dispute has already reached federal court. U.S. District Judge Mark E. Walker granted a preliminary injunction preventing DeSantis from enforcing the relevant executive order against CAIR while litigation proceeds. The judge concluded that CAIR was likely to succeed on its First Amendment challenge, questioning whether a governor could unilaterally impose such consequences on a domestic civil-rights organization without the procedural protections associated with federal terrorist designations. CAIR has maintained that it condemns terrorism and violence.

Why This Matters to You

The controversy sits at the intersection of two responsibilities Americans expect their government to take seriously: protecting the country from terrorism and protecting constitutional liberties. Authorities have a legitimate obligation to investigate organizations or individuals when credible evidence indicates financing, material support or operational connections to terrorist activity. At the same time, the First Amendment protects religious exercise, speech and association for Muslims just as it does for Christians, Jews and Americans of other faiths.

That distinction is essential as policymakers respond to Fine’s warnings. Government should aggressively investigate specific evidence of terrorist financing, foreign direction, criminal activity or attempts to impose unlawful coercion, using established legal procedures and judicial oversight. It should not treat ordinary Muslim religious observance as evidence of extremism merely because of a person’s faith. Fine’s remarks guarantee that the argument over Islamism, religious liberty and national security will continue, but the stakes extend beyond political rhetoric: America’s challenge is to confront genuine extremist threats without surrendering the constitutional principles that distinguish the nation those security measures are intended to protect.
