Target has once again found itself in the middle of a self-inflicted controversy after the retail giant was forced to apologize and pull a children’s Halloween costume from its website that critics say evoked racist blackface and minstrel-era imagery.

The item in question was marketed as the Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume Bodysuit, sold under Target’s in-house Hyde and EEK Boutique seasonal brand. The product photo showed a Black child model wearing an orange and black outfit with a ruffled collar, black gloves, and a face covering featuring an exaggerated, painted-on smile.

Social media users quickly noticed the resemblance between the costume’s design and the racist caricatures used in Jim Crow-era minstrel shows, in which performers, often in blackface, exaggerated features to demean Black Americans. The backlash spread rapidly across platforms including X and Threads.

Faced with mounting criticism, Target issued a statement late Monday announcing it had removed the item from sale. The company admitted, “As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry.”

Target went further, acknowledging in its statement that the costume was especially hurtful for its Black customers, employees, and business partners, and said it was reviewing internally how such a product made it onto shelves in the first place.

The costume’s removal did little to stop the fallout. Calls for a boycott of Target began circulating almost immediately, echoing a similar boycott movement the company faced roughly a year earlier over its decision to scale back diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

That earlier controversy had already left Target in a delicate position with both conservative and progressive shoppers. After years of embracing aggressive DEI branding, the company reversed course last year, following the lead of retailers like Walmart and McDonald’s, and scaled back many of its diversity initiatives.

Ironically, some critics on the left have now seized on the costume controversy to argue that Target’s retreat from DEI left it without adequate internal review processes to catch offensive products before they reach the public. A Minneapolis business leader was quoted asking pointedly why no one in the company’s home office caught the problem before the costume went up for sale.

Conservative commentators, meanwhile, have pushed back on the idea that the incident proves anything about diversity staffing, noting that basic product review and quality control, not ideological programming, should have flagged an obviously provocative image before it ever reached a retail website.

The financial fallout was immediate. Target’s stock dropped more than five percent at its lowest point the day after the apology, as investors weighed the reputational damage against a backdrop of already sluggish sales performance for the company this year.

This is far from the first time Target has stumbled into a public relations crisis tied to social and cultural issues. In 2023, the retailer faced a fierce backlash over its Pride Month merchandise collection, which included items that many parents viewed as inappropriate for children, prompting the removal of certain products from stores nationwide.

That controversy escalated to the point of reported confrontations between angry customers and Target employees, forcing the company to scale back its Pride-themed offerings in subsequent years. By 2024, Target had already reduced the number of stores carrying Pride merchandise before eventually rolling back broader DEI commitments altogether last year.

The pattern has left Target in an unusual position of facing criticism from multiple directions at once. Conservative shoppers who once boycotted the company over Pride merchandising have largely already moved on, while some left-leaning customers now feel alienated by both the DEI rollback and this latest costume controversy.

Retail analysts say the incident underscores a broader challenge facing large corporations that try to walk a middle line on cultural issues. Attempts to please every constituency can leave companies exposed on all sides when missteps like this occur.

Target has not said how the costume made it through its product approval process, nor has it detailed what specific changes it plans to implement to prevent similar incidents going forward. The company’s statement promised only that it was looking closely at how the situation happened.

It is also worth noting that products under Target’s private seasonal brands, including Hyde and EEK, have occasionally shown up for resale on third party marketplaces such as Walmart, Amazon, and Etsy. Target’s costume in question does not appear to have been listed on those platforms, according to spokespeople contacted for comment.

The costume controversy adds to a string of recent headaches for Target beyond social issues, including a recent recall of children’s sandals over a choking hazard and unrelated product contamination concerns that have further strained consumer confidence in the brand this year.
