A pair of fossilized leg bones dredged from the seafloor off the coast of Taiwan has set off a wave of interest among scientists and believers alike, reviving a debate that stretches back thousands of years to the pages of the Old Testament. Researchers led by a team from the University of Tokyo say the bones belonged to Denisovans, an extinct branch of the human family tree closely related to Neanderthals, and that the individuals who once carried them were remarkably large.

The fossils, a partial thigh bone and a shin bone known respectively as Penghu 2 and Penghu 3, were recovered from the Penghu Channel, the stretch of water separating Taiwan from mainland China. The channel was once dry land during the last Ice Age, when sea levels were far lower than they are today, which explains why fishermen and researchers have periodically pulled ancient bones up from what is now open ocean.

Using advanced protein analysis, the research team confirmed that the bones belonged to the Denisovan lineage, a group first identified from a finger bone and a handful of teeth found in a Siberian cave more than a decade ago.

Until now, almost nothing was known about what Denisovans actually looked like below the neck. These new leg bones are the first substantial postcranial remains ever linked to the species, and they are forcing scientists to reconsider what these ancient humans may have looked like.

The numbers themselves are striking. Researchers estimate that one individual stood roughly 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed around 183 pounds, while the other may have reached 6 feet 3 inches and topped 200 pounds.

At the upper end, that places these ancient individuals as much as eight inches taller than the average modern man, a figure that has captured public attention well beyond the usual audience for paleoanthropology papers.

It did not take long for the discovery to collide with a much older story. For thousands of years, readers of the Old Testament have puzzled over passages describing the Nephilim, a mysterious race often interpreted as giants who appear in the book of Genesis and are referenced again later in the biblical narrative. Some traditions describe them as the offspring of fallen angels and human women, while others treat the references more symbolically.

Either way, the idea of an ancient race of unusually large humans has fascinated readers of Scripture for millennia.

Independent researcher and commentator Jimmy Corsetti was among the first to publicly connect the Denisovan discovery to the Nephilim tradition, and his commentary spread quickly online. The comparison is not a scientific claim in the formal sense.

James Lasher, writing for Charisma Magazine, argued that Christians should not be quick to dismiss the connection outright simply because it has not been proven in a laboratory. He noted that the discovery does not prove Denisovans were the Nephilim of Genesis, but he suggested it should give pause to those who assume biblical descriptions of the ancient world must always be explained away whenever science stumbles onto something unexpected.

He pointed to the book of Daniel’s promise that knowledge would increase in the last days as a lens through which to view the steady stream of ancient discoveries reshaping our understanding of early human history.
