House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has found himself in an uncomfortable spot after news broke that he held a secret, closed-door meeting with Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and one of the most influential outside advisers in the administration. The revelation, first reported by The New York Times, has ignited a firestorm within Democrat ranks, with progressive activists accusing their top House leader of cozying up to the very White House he claims to be fighting.

The meeting took place quietly in a private space in New York City in recent weeks, arranged by a mutual friend of the two men. According to multiple sources familiar with the sit-down, Jeffries and Kushner discussed a range of policy issues, including housing, immigration, and the cost of living, with an eye toward what common ground might exist should Democrats retake control of the House in the November midterms.

What makes the meeting particularly notable is the fact that Kushner holds no official title in the current administration. He is not a cabinet secretary, not a confirmed appointee, and not on any government payroll. Yet he continues to operate as one of Trump’s most trusted emissaries, working behind the scenes on foreign policy matters ranging from the Middle East to Russia and Ukraine.

That an unelected, unofficial adviser can secure a private audience with the man hoping to become the next Speaker of the House says a great deal about how Washington actually works behind the curtain of public posturing.

For years, Jeffries has postured as an unrelenting opponent of the president, trading insults with Trump on social media and in press conferences. Trump once mocked Jeffries as “a low-IQ individual” and a “thug” in a Truth Social post depicting him holding a baseball bat.

Jeffries fired back by calling Trump a “wannabe thug.” The rhetoric from both sides has been fierce and personal for much of this Congress.

That is precisely why the secret meeting has proven so jarring to Jeffries’ progressive base. Many Democrat voters and commentators who have spent years being told that Trump and everyone associated with him represents an existential threat to the republic are now watching their own party leader quietly break bread, or at least share a conference table, with Trump’s own son-in-law.

The backlash from the left has been swift and unsparing. Mehdi Hasan, the CEO of the left-wing outlet Zeteo, said the only legitimate reason for Jeffries to meet with Kushner would be to warn him about a looming subpoena. “The only meeting Hakeem Jeffries should be having with Jared Kushner is to tell him he’ll be subpoenaed by the House for a corruption investigation on day one of Democratic control of the House,” Hasan wrote. “This is just pathetic stuff from the House Dem leader.”

Tommy Vietor, a former Obama aide who now co-hosts the popular progressive podcast Pod Save America, was equally blunt. He argued that Kushner “has no actual government job” and merely “uses his family connections to get money from Gulf autocrats and fund corrupt deals.” Vietor said the only appropriate way for Jeffries to engage with Kushner would be through demands for documents and subpoenas, not friendly private conversation.

Other progressive voices piled on as well. Michelle Kinney, co-founder of a Democrat activist network, posted an expletive-laden rant demanding that Kushner be hauled in front of a committee rather than treated to a private meeting. The anger reflects a growing and long-simmering frustration among grassroots Democrats who believe their leadership in Washington is too eager to seek comity with a White House they have spent years describing in apocalyptic terms.

This is not an isolated incident either. The uproar over the Kushner meeting comes on the heels of renewed calls from progressive critics that both Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should step aside from their leadership posts altogether. Grassroots Democrats have grown weary of what they view as their leadership’s habit of talking tough in public while quietly seeking accommodation behind closed doors.

For his part, Jeffries has tried to have it both ways. In a statement issued after the story broke, he insisted that Republicans have adopted a “my-way-or-the-highway approach to governing that has failed the American people.” He added that in every conversation with the Trump administration, Democrats will make clear that “the affordability crisis is not a hoax” and that nothing short of “transformational policy change” is acceptable.

Jeffries later confirmed the meeting directly in a video posted to social media, saying that Kushner had reached out and asked for the meeting, and that he accepted in order to discuss the affordability crisis facing American families. He also declared that “no one from the Trump Cartel is getting a pass,” an attempt to reassure his restless base that the meeting was not a sign of surrender.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, when asked about the meeting, professed to know little about it. “I don’t know what that’s about,” Johnson told Fox News’ Peter Doocy. “I know Jared has interests and lots of other things going on. Kushner and Jeffries are not entirely strangers to bipartisan cooperation.
