New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under mounting criticism following an alleged antisemitic assault inside Manhattan’s Central Synagogue, where authorities say a man disrupted Shabbat services, struck a congregant, damaged property and attacked a security guard. Police arrested 46-year-old Larry Montes at the scene and charged him with offenses including assault as a hate crime and criminal mischief as a hate crime. No one was reported seriously injured.

After the incident, Mamdani publicly condemned the violence, writing that he was “horrified by the assault at Central Synagogue” and pledging that his administration would do everything within its power to protect Jewish New Yorkers. But the statement did little to quiet critics, some of whom argued that Mamdani’s previous rhetoric about Israel and Zionism had contributed to an increasingly hostile political environment. The available reporting does not establish that the mayor’s statements caused the attack, and that allegation remains an argument advanced by his critics rather than a conclusion from law enforcement.

Details & Background

The controversy is particularly significant because prominent Jewish leaders had already raised concerns directly with Mamdani before the attack. Central Synagogue Senior Rabbi Angela Buchdahl had warned the mayor that rhetoric she believed demonized Jews or Israel could help create an environment in which threats and violence become more likely. A separate group of New York rabbis also met with Mamdani at City Hall to discuss concerns about his statements on Israel and their potential effect on Jewish residents.

Mamdani has long been identified with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement targeting Israel and has faced repeated questions over statements involving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. During his political rise, he was criticized for initially declining to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada,” although he later said he would discourage its use. He has also sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Those positions have made Mamdani a polarizing figure among New Yorkers debating where criticism of the Israeli government ends and rhetoric viewed as threatening by parts of the Jewish community begins.

Reactions

Among the strongest reactions came from Israeli Consul General in New York Ofir Akunis, who accused the mayor of pursuing what he characterized as a sustained campaign of inflammatory rhetoric. Akunis called the synagogue assault a “direct result” of Mamdani’s rhetoric, an accusation Mamdani did not directly address when later questioned. Instead, the mayor pointed to his administration’s Office to Combat Antisemitism and said he was focused on serving Jewish residents throughout all five boroughs.

Other critics highlighted older remarks by Mamdani, including his statement comparing the New York Police Department with the Israel Defense Forces while arguing that activists should connect the Palestinian cause to domestic political struggles. Former defense official Ezra Cohen and several pro-Israel activists also condemned the mayor after the synagogue incident. At the same time, Mamdani’s administration has publicly presented combating antisemitism as an official priority, and the city maintains a Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism. Earlier in his administration, Mamdani described antisemitism as an active threat that New York must confront rather than simply a historical lesson.

Why This Matters to You

For Americans far beyond New York, the episode touches on one of the most basic expectations of local government: people should be able to worship without fearing assault because of their religion. Synagogues, churches, mosques and other houses of worship depend on law enforcement and elected officials to treat threats seriously, investigate hate crimes aggressively and protect congregations without political favoritism. Authorities responded to the Central Synagogue incident by making an arrest and bringing hate-crime charges, placing the immediate criminal case in the hands of investigators and prosecutors.

The larger dispute will not be settled by assigning criminal responsibility to political rhetoric without evidence. It does, however, place additional pressure on Mamdani to demonstrate that his condemnation of antisemitism will be matched by consistent policy, public language and security measures. Jewish leaders who warned him about the atmosphere surrounding their communities are now demanding that those concerns be heard. For city government, the responsibility is straightforward: protect Jewish New Yorkers, prosecute violence under the law, distinguish political disagreement from hatred directed at people because of their identity, and ensure that every religious community can enter a house of worship without wondering whether the next political confrontation will reach its doors.
