Two Muslim teenagers inspired by ISIS hurled homemade bombs at a group of Christian protesters outside New York City’s Gracie Mansion on March 7, 2026, in an attempted terrorist attack that federal authorities say was meant to kill dozens and outdo the Boston Marathon bombing in scale. The devices failed to fully detonate, sparing lives, but the incident has sparked widespread discussion about Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s public statements following the event.
The suspects, Emir Balat, 19, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 18, both from Pennsylvania, drove to Manhattan armed with TATP-based IEDs—the same volatile explosive favored by jihadists in Paris, Brussels, and Manchester. Prosecutors say the pair pledged allegiance to ISIS, scouted the small rally led by activist Jake Lang, and intended to massacre the attendees, whom they viewed as symbols of “Christian oppression” against Muslims.
The target was not random. Lang’s group had gathered to protest Mamdani’s election as the city’s first Muslim mayor and what participants describe as the accelerating Islamization of American institutions. Signs reading “No Sharia in NYC” and “Defend Christian America” lined the sidewalk when the bombs were thrown.
Miraculously, the explosives only partially detonated, causing no injuries and minimal property damage. NYPD bomb squad technicians later confirmed the devices contained enough TATP to have created a lethal shrapnel radius of over 50 feet in a crowded setting.
Federal charges filed in Manhattan include attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, providing material support to ISIS, and conspiracy to commit terrorism. Court documents reveal the suspects’ Telegram chats bragging they would “make Boston look small” and “send a message to the crusaders.”
Within hours of the incident, Mamdani issued a statement on X condemning “white supremacist intimidation” at the rally and calling Jake Lang a “known provocateur.” He made no mention of ISIS, radical Islam, or the religious motivation behind the attack until pressed by reporters two days later.
The New York Post ran a front-page headline reading “Muslim Mayor Silent on ISIS Bomb Plot Targeting Christians,” followed by an editorial describing Mamdani’s initial focus as selective. Columnist Miranda Devine wrote that the mayor appeared to prioritize one aspect of the event over another.
Fox News host Sean Hannity devoted a full segment to the story, playing clips of Mamdani’s initial statement side-by-side with footage of the smoking devices. Hannity noted that the mayor addressed the rally participants before commenting on the bombing itself.
Breitbart published photos of the rally attendees praying in a circle moments before the attack, with the article observing that Mamdani’s first public remarks centered on the protesters rather than the suspects’ stated ideology.
The Washington Examiner published an editorial describing Mamdani’s response as focused on the protesters’ presence rather than the nature of the attack itself.
National Review noted that Mamdani waited until a Thursday press conference—nearly 48 hours after the plot—to use the phrase “radical Islamist terrorism,” and only after being directly asked whether he believed the suspects acted in the name of their faith.
Mamdani’s campaign emphasized outreach to Muslim communities and criticized “Islamophobia” in law enforcement. Since taking office he has expanded funding for certain mosque-affiliated youth programs while reducing resources for some counter-extremism initiatives.
Jake Lang, the rally organizer, spoke to podcasters from an undisclosed location, saying the group has received death threats since the incident and plans to hold larger demonstrations. “They tried to kill us for praying against Sharia,” Lang said. “And the mayor’s first concern was our message.”
Security experts have noted that TATP’s ease of manufacture—using readily available household chemicals—makes it a favorite of lone-wolf and small-cell jihadists. The fact that two teenagers acquired and transported the precursor materials across state lines without detection has raised questions about surveillance and border security.
Several Republican members of the New York City Council have called for a special oversight hearing on the mayor’s handling of the incident, with one councilman stating that the response appeared uneven.
Online, hashtags such as #MamdaniSilent and #JihadInNYC have circulated, often accompanied by images of the failed bombs placed next to screenshots of Mamdani’s initial tweet.
Prominent voices including Laura Loomer, Charlie Kirk, and Matt Walsh have commented on the story. Walsh posted on X: “The mayor of America’s largest city won’t say the words ‘Islamic terrorism’ after an ISIS-inspired attack on Christians. That tells you everything.”
Some observers have suggested Mamdani’s reluctance stems from a desire to avoid alienating parts of his electoral coalition. Others describe the pattern of rhetoric—prompt attention to one element of the incident, delayed attention to another—as noticeable.
Law enforcement sources speaking anonymously to the New York Post said the suspects had been posting pro-ISIS content for months on encrypted apps, yet no intervention occurred until the devices were thrown. Questions have been raised about policing priorities.
The incident has renewed discussion over immigration vetting, with several governors calling to pause refugee resettlement from high-risk regions until improved screening measures are implemented.
In Dearborn, Minneapolis, and other cities with large Muslim populations, community leaders have condemned the attack while warning against a broader backlash against innocent Muslims. Mamdani echoed that sentiment in later remarks, urging New Yorkers not to “demonize an entire faith.”
The two suspects remain in federal custody without bail. If convicted on the top charges, they face life in prison or, theoretically, the death penalty—though recent federal practice has avoided capital cases in similar domestic terrorism prosecutions.
Meanwhile, the Gracie Mansion rally site has become an impromptu memorial, with candles, crosses, and American flags placed where the bombs landed. Supporters say they will return next month, larger and louder.
