California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, is facing criticism after reports revealed she received millions of dollars through her nonprofit organization, The Representation Project.
According to IRS filings cited in recent reports, Siebel Newsom has received more than $3.7 million over the past decade from the charity she founded.
The Representation Project focuses on combating gender stereotypes through films, educational programs, and activism. The organization typically generates between $1 million and $1.7 million annually through donations and grants.

Reports indicate that a portion of those funds has been paid to Siebel Newsom and her for-profit company, Girls Club LLC.
For the fiscal year ending in March 2024, the nonprofit reported $1,704,981 in gross receipts, with $300,000 reportedly paid to Siebel Newsom and related entities.
Earlier reporting also indicated that Siebel Newsom received about $2.3 million in compensation between 2011 and 2018 from the nonprofit.
Critics have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, noting that some donors to the organization have had business dealings with the state of California.
For example, PG&E reportedly donated about $290,000 between 2016 and 2018 to The Representation Project.
Kaiser Permanente also contributed donations to the nonprofit and later received a $500 million state contract for a field hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to reports.
Additional corporate donors have included AT&T, Comcast, and United Airlines, which have contributed funding or sponsorships to the organization in past years.
Some Republican critics have argued that such donations raise questions about influence and transparency when companies that interact with state government financially support a nonprofit connected to the governor’s family.
During California’s 2021 recall campaign, Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox criticized the arrangement, saying it created what he described as a conflict of interest.
Ethics watchdog groups have also pointed out that government officials must be careful about fundraising activities involving organizations connected to their families.
Beyond donations, Siebel Newsom’s film projects have also generated revenue.
Her documentaries, including “Miss Representation” and “The Mask You Live In,” have been licensed to schools across the United States.
Reports indicate that schools have paid between $49 and $599 for screenings and related educational materials.
Since 2012, those licensing fees have reportedly generated about $1.48 million.
The films are produced through Girls Club Entertainment, Siebel Newsom’s for-profit production company, while educational distribution has involved the nonprofit.
Governor Newsom has appeared in two of the films, which critics say further blurs the line between the governor’s office and his family’s advocacy work.
The Representation Project has also been involved in youth mental health and gender-equity initiatives.
Supporters note that Siebel Newsom has long advocated for programs addressing media representation, mental health awareness, and gender equality.
However, critics argue that the overlap between nonprofit activities, film production, and public policy initiatives raises concerns about potential conflicts.
Reports also noted that the nonprofit was listed as “delinquent” with the California Registry of Charities and Fundraisers after an issue with an annual filing in 2022, though organizations can continue operating while resolving compliance matters.
The controversy comes as California faces ongoing challenges, including budget pressures, homelessness, and crime concerns, issues that have drawn criticism toward the Newsom administration.
