Former NBA player and current Minnesota Republican U.S. Senate candidate Royce White has once again thrust himself into the national spotlight, this time delivering a jaw-dropping line on live television that immediately went viral across conservative media. The moment was captured and shared by Eric Daugherty, whose social media post racked up millions of views within hours.

White, appearing on national television after formally declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft, told viewers he is “having a blast” in what he called his “feminine era.” He went further, stating flatly that he never actually believed he was a woman, a comment that many on the right viewed as a pointed satirical jab at the very gender ideology he says the WNBA now refuses to define.

“I think it’s only fair I get a chance to play with some of my queens,” White added, doubling down on the bit in front of a national audience. The remarks came just days after White formally announced his intention to enter the WNBA Draft, a move he insists is a serious legal and political challenge rather than a stunt.

White is not acting alone. Fellow former NBA big man Enes Kanter Freedom also declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft around the same time, arguing that if the league cannot clearly define what qualifies a person as a woman, then neither man should be excluded from consideration. Freedom put it bluntly, saying that if he is not a woman, the league will finally have to admit it can, in fact, determine who is.

The two men, both well over six and a half feet tall and each weighing in at more than 250 pounds, present an obvious contrast to the average WNBA roster.

White is listed at six foot eight and roughly 270 pounds. Freedom stands six foot ten. Their declarations were designed to highlight what conservatives have long argued is an unworkable contradiction at the heart of progressive gender policy, that a league built for women’s athletics has no clear standard for who counts as a woman.

The pressure campaign appears to be working. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert sent a memo to players and teams last week announcing that the league will convene meetings specifically to review its transgender eligibility policy. The memo, obtained by the Associated Press, acknowledged that players have been fielding questions about transgender participation in women’s basketball and that the topic will likely continue to draw significant attention.

Conservative commentators were quick to seize on the moment as proof that years of warnings about the consequences of unclear gender policy in women’s sports have finally reached a breaking point.

Fox Sports personality Clay Travis said the WNBA has effectively been “checkmated” by the two men, arguing the league now has no choice but to either define womanhood in a legally coherent way or open its doors to any man who declares himself a woman.

White’s television moment did not happen in a vacuum. On August 4, he posted on social media platform X that he was pursuing a career in the WNBA, describing himself as someone who “sometimes identifies” as a trans woman. He said he wished to be treated fairly and not discriminated against, framing his effort as a serious pursuit rather than a joke, even as the tone of his public comments suggested otherwise.

In a separate interview with Fox News Digital, White expanded on his rationale, asking rhetorically how any team could pass up a six foot eight, 270 pound point forward.

The comment underscored the argument conservatives have made for years, that allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports categories inevitably means physical mismatches that fundamentally undermine fair competition for female athletes.

White has also spoken with sports media personality Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson about his motivations, telling him this is not a political stunt but a serious pursuit that could end in a major legal battle. White said he expects the fight over WNBA eligibility rules, which currently state that only women may play, to end up in court, and he called that outcome “probably necessary.”

Notably, White acknowledged he has not yet filed formal paperwork with the WNBA. His legal team is reportedly still reviewing its options, which has led some observers to view the entire effort as more theater than genuine legal challenge.

Even so, the cultural impact has been significant, forcing a league that has aggressively marketed itself as a champion of inclusion to publicly grapple with the practical consequences of its own stated values.

White is no stranger to controversy or to the political arena. He is currently running for the second time as the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Minnesota, a state that has trended reliably Democrat in recent federal elections. In a wide-ranging interview with a Minneapolis television station, White criticized the state of American health care policy, comparing its dysfunction to what he called the foreign policy quagmire in the Middle East.

His basketball career before entering politics was defined as much by controversy as by talent. White was a first-round NBA draft pick who struggled with a publicized anxiety disorder that limited his playing time and led to conflicts with team management.

Since retiring from professional basketball, he has become an outspoken conservative media figure, frequently appearing on Fox News and other right-leaning outlets to discuss politics, culture, and sports.
