House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a previously undisclosed private meeting with Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House advisor, according to reporting from The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman and Annie Karni. The sit-down took place in recent weeks at a mutual friend’s apartment in New York City, arranged quietly and away from the cameras even as the two parties trade near-daily attacks over the direction of the country ahead of the midterms.

According to people familiar with the meeting, Jeffries and Kushner discussed a range of policy areas including housing costs, immigration, and the broader affordability crisis gripping American families. Kushner reportedly went a step further, floating the idea that Jeffries sit down directly with Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles, to continue the conversation — a suggestion that, if acted on, would mark a real break from the scorched-earth rhetoric that has defined the Trump-Jeffries relationship for most of this Congress.

Details & Background

The meeting is a striking reversal given the personal animosity Trump has directed at Jeffries throughout his presidency. The president has previously called the Democratic leader a “thug” and “low IQ,” and at one point circulated an AI-generated video mocking him. Yet in recent remarks to Punchbowl News, Trump struck an entirely different tone, saying of Jeffries, “We had a good meeting,” and describing him as “a nice guy” — the kind of praise that would have been unthinkable from Trump just months earlier.

The private diplomacy isn’t without precedent. Jeffries and Kushner previously worked together during Trump’s first term on criminal justice and prison reform legislation, giving the two men an existing working relationship to draw on now. But the stakes are far higher this time: with Republicans bracing for a difficult midterm election and Democrats increasingly optimistic about retaking the House, Jeffries is positioned to become the next Speaker — a job that would hand him direct control over the House’s oversight and impeachment powers over the very administration he just quietly met with.

Reactions

Jeffries defended the meeting in a statement, insisting his party’s substantive demands haven’t shifted an inch. “Throughout this Congress, Republicans have adopted a my-way-or-the-highway approach to governing that has failed the American people,” he said, adding that “in every conversation that we have with the Trump administration, we will continue to make it explicitly clear that the affordability crisis is not a hoax.” In a separate comment to the Times, he was even more direct: “The affordability crisis is not a hoax, and nothing short of transformational policy change is acceptable.”

That explanation did little to satisfy the party’s activist wing, which erupted online almost as soon as the story broke. Democratic strategist Tommy Vietor wrote that “Jared Kushner has no actual government job he just uses his family connections to get money from gulf autocrats and fund corrupt deals.” Media critic Jeff Jarvis argued the party should be doing the opposite of outreach: “We want fighters, not conciliators. There is no working with fascists.” Commentator Jim Stewartson was blunter still: “This guy needs to go. End of story.” Former Republican strategist Tim Miller offered a more sarcastic read on the whole episode: “The only good reason I can imagine for a Jeffries meeting with Kushner is to personally deliver a subpoena for his testimony.”

Why This Matters to You

Democrats have spent the past year promising voters they’ll hold the Trump administration fully accountable if given power back in the House, including open talk of a third impeachment push should Jeffries become Speaker. A secret sit-down with the president’s own son-in-law, arranged quietly and disclosed only after a Times investigation uncovered it, is a hard thing to square with that message — and it’s already fracturing trust between the party’s leadership and the activist base that turns out to vote for it.

For voters trying to figure out what a Democratic majority would actually do with power, the episode is revealing in its own way. The party’s leadership appears more interested in backchannel deal-making with Trump’s inner circle than the confrontational politics its loudest voices demand, even while campaigning on exactly that confrontation. Whether that’s pragmatic governing ahead of a possible majority or a betrayal of the base depends entirely on who in the Democratic coalition you ask — and right now, a great many Democrats are asking that question about their own leader.
