The airspace over El Paso, Texas, has been repeatedly closed in recent weeks after authorities detected a sharp rise in drone activity linked to Mexican drug cartels. The unmanned aerial vehicles have been observed flying deep into U.S. territory, crossing the Rio Grande and operating over populated areas of the city, including residential neighborhoods and near critical infrastructure.Federal aviation officials issued temporary flight restrictions covering large portions of El Paso County after multiple confirmed sightings of cartel drones carrying contraband, conducting surveillance, or testing U.S. response capabilities. The closures have disrupted commercial and private aviation, with several inbound flights diverted and local pilots grounded during active alerts. The FAA has coordinated closely with Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Defense to monitor and intercept the intrusions. The drones are believed to belong to factions of the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, which have increasingly used UAVs to scout border patrol positions, smuggle small quantities of fentanyl and methamphetamine, and intimidate communities on both sides of the border. Several drones have been shot down or forced to land by federal agents in recent months, but the frequency of flights has surged in the past two weeks.Local officials and congressional representatives from Texas have called for emergency funding and expanded authorities to counter the aerial threat, citing risks to public safety and national security. The situation has added urgency to ongoing debates over border security funding and technology in the current congressional session.
