Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) made a bold stand on the Senate floor this week, attempting to pass a trio of bills that would stop pay for members of Congress and restore pay for federal workers during the prolonged government shutdown. The effort came on day 37 of the shutdown, as federal employees faced missed paychecks, grounded flights, and growing frustration.

Kennedy’s “No Shutdown Paychecks to Politicians Act” would have withheld pay from lawmakers during the shutdown — with no back pay once it ended. But the proposal didn’t even reach a vote. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) objected to Kennedy’s first measure, and when Kennedy pivoted to Senator Ron Johnson’s (R-Wis.) “Shutdown Fairness Act,” which would have paid essential federal employees, Democrat Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) stepped in to block it altogether.

Details & Background

In a heartfelt speech, Kennedy laid out the simple moral principle behind his bills: “Our air traffic controllers are not being paid. Our staff are not being paid. Federal employees are not being paid. The only people that I can ascertain who are being paid are members of Congress.” Kennedy himself pledged not to take a salary during the shutdown, urging colleagues to follow suit.

The Louisiana senator underscored that this wasn’t about partisanship — it was about leadership. “It’s time that Congress set an example,” he said. Kennedy’s two proposals aimed to align lawmakers’ incentives with the plight of everyday Americans. His third move, supporting Ron Johnson’s bill, would have provided pay to essential federal workers who continued to show up on the job despite the shutdown. But that, too, was blocked.

Reactions

After Murray’s objection effectively killed all three efforts, Kennedy expressed visible frustration. “I don’t know what else to do,” he said. “I voted 14 times to open up the government. I can’t change the election. President Trump was duly elected president of the United States.” Kennedy accused Democrats of prolonging the shutdown out of hatred for President Trump. “They hate him so much that if President Trump came out in favor of breathing to live, they would hold their breath.”

The remarks drew applause from conservatives and working Americans who felt the shutdown was being used as a political weapon. Kennedy urged Democrats to put aside emotion and act responsibly: “You’re just being too emotional. You need to go drink a big old cold tall glass of ‘get over it’ and realize that President Trump is the president of the United States.”

Why This Matters to You

While families across America face lost wages, canceled flights, and delayed government services, many in Congress continue to draw paychecks. Senator Kennedy’s efforts to suspend congressional pay struck a chord with working-class Americans who believe public service should come with accountability. Democrats’ refusal to support even that measure shows where their priorities truly lie.

By blocking Kennedy’s bills, Democrats preserved their own comfort at the expense of public servants — from TSA agents to Coast Guard members — who continue to work without pay. The incident exposes how political animosity toward President Trump continues to override common sense in Washington. For millions of Americans watching this unfold, Kennedy’s words ring true: leadership starts with setting the right example.
