A veteran journalist who spent years digging into Jeffrey Epstein’s sprawling New Mexico compound says she has been targeted by directed energy weapons, permanently injured, and is now fleeing the United States. The claims, while unverified, are drawing significant attention given the subject matter she has dedicated years of her career to exposing.

Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez — a former reporter for the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times who later became a bestselling novelist — says she abruptly abandoned her New Mexico residence after suffering what she described as symptoms consistent with “Havana syndrome,” the still-disputed cluster of neurological symptoms first reported by American diplomats stationed in Cuba beginning in 2016.

“This morning, I was hit in my home office by two episodes of what I later learned were likely Direct Energy Weapon attacks,” Valdes-Rodriguez wrote on her Substack page. “We wasted no time in leaving the house, for good.” She says she is now staying in safe houses while making final preparations to leave the United States permanently.

The journalist’s reporting had focused specifically on Epstein’s Zorro Ranch — a roughly 7,600-acre compound located near Los Alamos, New Mexico, one of the most sensitive nuclear weapons facilities in the country.

Her work had zeroed in on what she alleged were intelligence community connections to the ranch’s operations, buried victims on the property, and surveillance activity tied to Epstein’s broader network. None of those specific claims have been independently substantiated publicly.

“It appears my home has been located by, well, whoever is unhappy about my reporting about Zorro Ranch and the local cover-up here and the military intelligence roots of the child sex trafficking operation Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell were running here in New Mexico,” she wrote on Substack.

In a follow-up post, Valdes-Rodriguez described the alleged attacks in more disturbing terms, claiming the weapons could generate a three-dimensional model of the inside of a home in real time and “zero in on a body part.”

She described them as “the most cowardly weapons ever created” and said they “attack you at your most vulnerable and trusting, in your home, in bed, and do not kill right away.”

She has since described herself as “permanently injured” as a result of the alleged attacks and offered no physical evidence to support her claims. However, directed energy weapons are not fiction — they are a documented and real technology.

The Government Accountability Office has published formal reports on them. American law enforcement agencies have deployed them for crowd control purposes.

And the leading explanation for Havana Syndrome—the injuries suffered by American diplomats and CIA officers beginning in 2016—remains a portable Russian microwave weapon that Homeland Security agents reportedly purchased from arms traffickers as recently as 2024.

What gives Valdes-Rodriguez’s claims additional weight in some quarters is Epstein’s own documented and disturbing history with journalists who covered him. The disgraced financier reportedly once sent a bullet to a reporter’s doorstep and a severed cat’s head to another.

The Department of Justice was caught tracking a journalist who had exposed him. Whether directed energy weapons fit that pattern of intimidation, or whether Valdes-Rodriguez is experiencing something else entirely, remains an open question.

The New Mexico Attorney General’s investigation into Epstein’s Zorro Ranch remains active, with AG Raul Torrez urging survivors to contact investigators directly, calling their cooperation essential to the criminal probe. A Miami Herald investigation has since broadened the scope of potential leads, reporting on Epstein’s ties to Venezuelan, Cuban, and Caribbean elites.

The full picture of what went on at Zorro Ranch — and who knew about it — remains stubbornly incomplete.
