Trump, a lifelong New York Knicks fan, attended the game as the Knicks hosted the San Antonio Spurs in the first home Finals game at MSG in 27 years.

The moment was electric, a President cheering on his hometown team on the grandest stage in basketball. For Silver, it was a moment worth defending.

“He was a fixture at Madison Square Garden… he had courtside seats, here all the time. He was at drafts. He’s a genuine Knicks fan,” Silver told the Inside the NBA crew before tip-off.

The commissioner’s message was clear: Donald Trump’s appearance at Madison Square Garden was not a political stunt. It was a longtime fan coming to the biggest game of the year.

Silver pushed back firmly against the predictable wave of criticism that followed Trump’s attendance announcement.

Rather than engage in politics, the commissioner leaned on historical fact, pointing out that Trump was a regular and highly visible presence at Knicks games long before entering public office.

Silver told the broadcast crew that Trump’s attendance represented something Americans still have in common: a love of basketball and a love of New York City.

It was a measured, fair, and graceful response to what had become a politically charged story.

Security preparations surrounding Trump’s visit created significant logistical challenges for fans, including longer lines and canceled watch parties around the city.

Silver acknowledged those disruptions honestly but made clear that a genuine fan attending his team’s biggest game in decades was worth the inconvenience.

The contrast between Silver’s approach and the reaction from some critics was striking.

Many NBA players and commentators have historically held negative views of Trump, and some openly expressed displeasure at his appearance.

Silver, however, refused to pander to that sentiment and instead welcomed the President as a basketball fan.

It was a notable display of institutional leadership from a commissioner who has often found himself navigating political controversies.

The NBA has frequently been at the center of the intersection between sports and politics.

From the 2020 bubble season to social justice messaging and player activism, the league spent years embracing political causes that divided portions of its audience.

Silver’s comments Monday night suggested a more balanced approach.

Trump’s attendance also reflected a broader cultural shift that has taken place since his return to office.

Sports are meant to be a unifying space where Americans from different backgrounds and political beliefs can gather around a shared passion.

Silver’s welcoming posture reflected that ideal.

The commissioner had previously said he was “thrilled” that Trump planned to attend the Finals and never walked back that statement despite criticism from opponents.

For all the noise surrounding the visit, the reality was simple: a man who had attended Knicks games for decades showed up for the most important Knicks game in decades, and Adam Silver recognized that truth for exactly what it was.
