A years-old video clip of leftist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has resurfaced online this week, reigniting a fierce debate over the Democratic Socialists of America darling’s rhetoric and the party establishment figures who have chosen to campaign alongside him.

In the clip, which appears to date back to an early stream sometime between 2018 and 2020, Piker can be heard telling his audience that mass immigration into the United States is a deliberate strategy. “We’re going to keep bringing immigrants into this country just so they can have sex with your sister, and then maybe even your daughter,” he said, according to multiple accounts of the footage circulating on social media. He then added, “We’re going to destroy the white race, bitch. That’s what we’re here to do.”

The clip began recirculating widely over the weekend, racking up millions of views across X and other platforms. Some accounts that reposted the video noted that Piker delivered the lines with an exaggerated, zoomed-in camera style that a handful of longtime viewers have described as an attempt at dark comedic exaggeration rather than a literal policy statement. Critics argue that framing does little to soften the impact of the words themselves, especially given the pattern of similarly inflammatory remarks Piker has made over the years.

Indeed, this is far from the only controversial statement attributed to Piker. He has previously been quoted as saying that America “deserved” the September 11 terrorist attacks. He has also come under fire for comments urging listeners to “go back to Auschwitz,” along with remarks widely characterized as racially disparaging toward black and Asian Americans. In a separate clip that circulated earlier this year, Piker was heard telling his audience to “kill” capitalists, saying he wanted the streets to “soak in their fucking red capitalist blood.”

Piker was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and has described himself as culturally Muslim. He is the nephew of Cenk Uygur, the co-founder of the progressive media outlet The Young Turks, where Piker got his start in political commentary before building his own multimillion-follower streaming audience on Twitch.

What has turned this from an online controversy into a bigger political story is Piker’s increasingly visible role inside Democratic Party politics. Over the past several months, Piker has appeared alongside a number of prominent progressive figures and campaigned for Democratic Socialists of America-aligned candidates running for office this cycle. Reporting has tied him to appearances with Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong, as well as sitting members of Congress including Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, both of whom have appeared on his show.

That proximity has become a flashpoint for Republicans, who argue Democratic leaders have been all too willing to lend their credibility to a figure with a long trail of extreme statements in exchange for access to his enormous online following. “Democrats are campaigning with him,” conservative commentator Eyal Yakoby wrote in a widely shared post alongside the resurfaced footage, arguing the party owes voters a direct answer on whether it condones Piker’s rhetoric.

Other conservative voices have gone further, calling on Democratic leadership to publicly and unequivocally denounce Piker by name. As of this writing, no senior Democratic officials who have appeared with Piker have issued a statement addressing the resurfaced comments directly.

Attorney and Army veteran David Urban also drew attention this week to a separate montage of Piker clips that he said “every black voter in America should see,” which included additional remarks in which Piker said he did not “give a” what black voters care about and referenced a “better time” tied to lynchings, according to footage compiled by critics online. The compilation has been circulating alongside the “white race” clip as part of a broader effort by conservative media to catalogue Piker’s public statements.

Piker’s rise inside Democratic circles has coincided with the party’s broader leftward drift heading into the 2026 midterms, a shift that has been most visible in the surprise primary victories of democratic socialist-aligned candidates in cities and states around the country. New York City’s mayoral race, won by democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, is frequently cited as the moment that catapulted Piker from a niche online personality into a figure with real influence inside the party’s activist wing.

Some reporting has also connected Piker to broader scrutiny of left-wing activist networks and their financial and organizational ties abroad. Independent journalists and watchdog accounts have published pieces examining Piker’s connections to nongovernmental organizations they allege maintain links to a Marxist financier based in China, and separate reporting has noted that federal investigators have looked into a “humanitarian” trip to Communist Cuba involving Piker and a co-founder of the activist group CodePink. None of these matters have resulted in formal charges against Piker, and he has not been convicted of any crime connected to the reporting.

For now, the controversy has mostly played out in the court of public opinion, with conservative outlets and personalities using the clip to press Democrats on where they stand. Political observers on the right argue that the episode illustrates a wider pattern in which the Democratic Party has, in its rush to reach younger and more online audiences, elevated commentators whose rhetoric would have been disqualifying in an earlier era of American politics.

Supporters of Piker, for their part, maintain that the clip is being taken out of context and note that Piker has built an audience in the millions by embracing a deliberately provocative, shock-jock style of commentary not unlike conservative talk radio hosts of decades past. They argue that isolated clips, some of them years old, do not fairly represent the entirety of his political commentary.

That defense has done little to slow the spread of the video, however, and Republican strategists say they expect to use it as a cudgel against vulnerable Democrats in competitive races this fall, particularly candidates who have appeared alongside Piker or accepted his public support.

Whether senior Democratic leaders will formally address the clip remains an open question. Party officials have so far avoided direct comment, even as the pressure campaign from conservative media continues to build. With the midterms just months away, Republicans show no sign of dropping the issue, and the episode is likely to remain a flashpoint in the broader argument over who speaks for the modern Democratic Party.
