Activists were forming human barricades to block federal agents.

Protesters were spraying unknown chemical substances at law enforcement officers.

And against that backdrop, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller went on Sean Hannity’s program Thursday night and did what he does better than anyone in Washington: he said exactly what he meant.

Miller went on Hannity and called out Democrats directly for their “performative anti-ICE stunts” and what he described as repeated “lawlessness” in protests outside the New Jersey ICE facility.

He did not hedge.

He did not soften it.

He called it what it was.

The specific facility at the center of this week’s chaos is Delaney Hall, a privately operated immigration detention center in Newark holding roughly 900 individuals picked up in communities across New Jersey.

The facility, operated by the for-profit prison company GEO Group, became a renewed flashpoint this week after detainees began a hunger strike, with activists claiming detainees were being fed expired food and denied medical care.

The Department of Homeland Security denied the allegations.

DHS Secretary Michael Mullin alleged in a social media post that law enforcement agents were sprayed with an unknown chemical substance by protesters.

Two individuals were initially arrested for assaulting, resisting, and impeding federal officers.

By Wednesday, that number had risen significantly, and by Thursday the week’s arrest total at a single detention facility had reached fifteen.

Among those joining the protests were some of New Jersey’s most prominent elected Democrats.

Sen. Andy Kim and Governor Mikie Sherrill both appeared outside Delaney Hall over the Memorial Day weekend.

While Kim was allowed entry to the facility, Sherrill was denied.

“My request to access the facility was denied this morning, raising even more questions about what they are trying to hide from public view. I’ll keep fighting for answers and to hold ICE accountable,” Sherrill said in a Facebook post.

She framed the denial as a cover-up rather than as standard security protocol at an active federal detention facility.

Also present at previous protests was Rep. LaMonica McIver, who has her own legal problems tied to exactly this kind of political theater.

McIver was arrested and charged federally in 2025 for allegedly assaulting an officer at Delaney Hall.

She pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals on June 23 to appeal a federal judge’s refusal to dismiss her charges.

She showed up anyway.

The message that sends to federal agents trying to do their jobs is obvious.

Sherrill subsequently announced that the state of New Jersey would establish a protected peaceful protest zone outside the facility, citing safety concerns following the deadly events in Minneapolis earlier this year.

The governor also called for Delaney Hall to be shut down entirely, a demand that her own officials acknowledged she has no legal authority to enforce.

The invocation of Minneapolis goes to the heart of what Miller has been arguing all year.

In January, Border Patrol agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse, during an immigration operation.

The Democratic Party’s official national account immediately sided with protesters against federal agents, posting videos and calling for ICE to leave Minnesota.

Miller responded on social media that the Democrats were siding with someone who had tried to murder federal law enforcement.

The official Democrat account responded to Miller with an expletive.

Then, the party’s Memorial Day social media account posted content so tone-deaf about the holiday that even Senator Tammy Duckworth, a disabled combat veteran and Illinois Democrat, publicly condemned it.

As one conservative commentator observed this week, Democrats are attacking Miller because they still cannot beat the argument he represents.

Most Americans support deporting illegal immigrants, even if many oppose some of the specific tactics used to carry it out.

When Democrats turn Miller into the object of official party contempt, they are showing voters their contempt for enforcement itself, and that is a risky political bet.

Miller’s argument has been consistent and constitutional from the start.

During a CNN interview addressing the ongoing protests, Miller asked pointedly:

“When in our history have we tolerated unlawful riotous assemblies night after night around FBI buildings, or ATF buildings, or DEA buildings? This is the textbook definition of domestic terrorism.”

The violence directed at ICE has been staggering in scale and escalation.

Attorney General Pam Bondi stated in a public letter to New Jersey officials that violence against ICE officers and agents has increased approximately 1,300 percent, and that vehicular attacks against ICE officers have specifically increased 3,200 percent.

These are documented law enforcement statistics representing real federal agents being targeted with lethal force for doing their jobs.

This is the context in which Miller’s words on Hannity must be understood.

He is not a man raging against political opponents for sport.

He is the principal architect of the immigration enforcement agenda that has delivered more deportations in a single year than any administration in modern American history, and he is watching elected officials of the opposing party show up at federal detention facilities to performatively demand the release of people in federal custody, while protesters assault the officers guarding them.

His response has been proportional to the provocation.

Democrats are trying and failing to imitate Trump’s assertiveness and confidence.

They are using vulgarities without credibility, sneers without a governing message, and aggression without a coherent policy alternative.

Voters can see the difference between authentic conviction and a bad imitation.

Miller is not going anywhere.

And neither is the enforcement agenda he helped build.

Democrats can hold their photo opportunities at the gates of Delaney Hall.

Miller will keep saying what he means, and the American people will keep noticing who is on which side.
