Rep. Ilhan Omar’s former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, has publicly identified himself as a gay man in an academic research paper, according to an October 30 report from TMZ, adding a new personal detail to the continuing public examination of their controversial marriage.
The revelation comes as Omar’s immigration history and past relationships have received renewed attention following reports of a federal investigation into her personal records.

Elmi, a British citizen who married Omar in 2009, discussed his sexual orientation in an academic paper published in August 2026.
The paper, titled Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya, examines research into violence affecting LGBTQ communities in East Africa.
Elmi is a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, where his academic work focuses on issues involving sexuality, identity, and the experiences of marginalized communities.
In the paper, he discussed how his own identity influenced his experiences as a researcher.
He wrote, “As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral.”
The statement was presented in the context of his academic research rather than as a comment about Omar or their former marriage.
Nevertheless, TMZ’s reporting drew attention because the marriage has been the subject of longstanding public allegations involving Elmi’s identity and possible immigration-related motives.
Some critics have alleged that Elmi was Omar’s brother and that the marriage was arranged to facilitate immigration benefits.
That alleged sibling relationship has not been established through publicly verified evidence or a court finding.
Elmi’s statement about his sexual orientation does not independently establish whether the marriage was genuine or whether any immigration laws were violated.
The information does, however, add to the biographical record of a person who has remained central to questions about Omar’s past.
TMZ also published a separate report examining court documents from Omar’s divorce from Elmi.
Those records show that the two married in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, in February 2009.
The marriage was legally dissolved on December 4, 2017, in Hennepin County District Court.
According to the divorce documents obtained by TMZ, the couple had been separated for more than three years before the divorce was finalized.
The records also indicate that Elmi did not participate in the final divorce proceedings.
His whereabouts were listed as unknown in the relevant court paperwork.
Notices concerning the proceedings were published in August and September 2017 after Omar was unable to locate him through the available process.
The judge subsequently granted the divorce after Elmi failed to respond.
Another detail in the divorce records concerns Omar’s relationship with Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, with whom she had children.
The filings identified Hirsi as the father of a daughter born in June 2012, while Omar was still legally married to Elmi.
The records also noted that Omar had not been in contact with Elmi since before the child’s conception.
That chronology provides documented information about the overlap between Omar’s legal marriage to Elmi and her personal relationship with Hirsi.
