Dr. Ashish Jha, who served as the Biden White House’s COVID-19 response coordinator, told CNN this week that he now believes the pandemic most likely began with a lab leak in Wuhan, China, a striking reversal from the position he held when he entered the administration and one that vindicates years of conservative criticism of how the pandemic’s origins were handled by public health officials and the media.

Jha made the comments during a Sunday interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” Bash pressed him on a lengthy social media post from commentator Jamie Metzl arguing that the available evidence overwhelmingly points to a research-related incident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology as the true origin of COVID-19. Jha had retweeted Metzl’s post, and when Bash asked him directly whether he agreed with it, he did not hedge. “I pretty much agree with everything here,” he said.

Pressed further on his own personal views, Jha offered an even more direct assessment. “When I went into the White House, my view was this was almost surely a natural outbreak, maybe a lab leak,” he told Bash. “Based on information I learned and based on information I’ve seen, I have come to conclude that it is more likely to have been a lab leak.”

That is a remarkable admission from a man who ran the federal government’s COVID-19 response under President Biden, a period during which the lab leak theory was treated by much of the media and public health establishment as a fringe conspiracy theory unworthy of serious consideration. Jha, who also served as dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health, did stop short of claiming certainty. “I’m not suggesting I know for sure, but I’m saying my best assessment is that it probably was a lab leak,” he said. It is a meaningful qualifier, and one that deserves to be reported honestly rather than overstated. Jha is not claiming proof. He is acknowledging that, in his own professional judgment, the balance of evidence now points toward an accidental leak rather than a natural spillover event.

Later on Sunday, Jha took to social media to clarify his position further, writing that his views on the matter are not new and that he has held them privately since his time in the White House. “Here’s the truth: no one in America knows for sure,” he wrote. “Anyone telling you they do is selling you something. Based on strong circumstantial evidence I’ve seen, I think lab leak is much more likely.” He was careful to add that he does not believe the virus was engineered or released deliberately, describing any leak as accidental rather than intentional, and noted that reasonable people could look at the same evidence and reach different conclusions.

The answer, according to many conservative critics, is that acknowledging a lab leak origin would have been politically inconvenient. It would have raised uncomfortable questions about American taxpayer funding for gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, questions that the Biden administration and public health officials like Dr. Anthony Fauci spent years trying to avoid.

Bash pushed Jha on this exact point during the interview, noting that he had reshared a post stating that the United States had been funding research at a Chinese institution where there was a lack of full transparency into what was actually being studied. Jha did not dispute the characterization. “I did,” he replied when asked whether he agreed with that assessment.

The reaction from conservative media and commentators was immediate and pointed. Many noted that President Trump himself suggested a lab origin as early as 2020, only to be widely mocked and dismissed by much of the press at the time. Kennedy Jr., who now serves as Health and Human Services Secretary, has also weighed in publicly on COVID-19 origins and vaccine policy in recent weeks, further amplifying scrutiny of how the pandemic was handled under prior leadership. His willingness to challenge established public health orthodoxy has made him a lightning rod, but Jha’s admission gives new weight to arguments that the previous consensus was built on incomplete or politically shaped information rather than settled science.

For years, mainstream outlets treated the lab leak theory dismissively, often citing early statements from virologists and public health officials who argued a natural spillover from an animal host, potentially through a wet market in Wuhan, was the more scientifically plausible explanation. That framing shaped media coverage, government messaging and even some academic research during the first two years of the pandemic.

It was not until later revelations, including congressional testimony, internal emails among prominent virologists, and intelligence community assessments, that the lab leak theory began to receive more serious mainstream consideration. The Department of Energy and the FBI have both previously assessed, with varying degrees of confidence, that a lab-related incident was a plausible or likely explanation for the pandemic’s origin, assessments that were downplayed by parts of the media when they were first reported.

Whether this admission leads to any broader institutional reckoning remains an open question. There has been little indication that outlets which spent years dismissing the lab leak theory plan to substantially revisit their earlier coverage decisions or apologize to the scientists and journalists who were marginalized for raising the possibility early on.

What is clear is that the scientific and political ground has shifted considerably since 2020. A theory once treated as fringe and even dangerous to discuss is now openly endorsed, with real caveats about uncertainty, by the very official who oversaw the federal pandemic response under President Biden.

Congressional Republicans, who have pushed for years for a full accounting of American funding tied to gain-of-function research in China, are likely to point to Jha’s comments as further justification for continued investigations into the National Institutes of Health’s prior funding relationships with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
