AOC Refuses to Rule Out 2028 White House Bid as Democratic Party’s Leftward Drift Accelerates

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez once again declined to close the door on a run for the White House in 2028, telling ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday that she has “not ruled out the possibility” of seeking the presidency, the clearest signal yet that the New York Democrat is positioning herself as a leading contender for her party’s nomination.

Pressed by host Jonathan Karl on whether she intends to run, Ocasio-Cortez initially deflected, saying, “I’m focused on winning the midterms. I’m running for Congress right now.” When Karl pushed further, she added, “I haven’t ruled out the possibility, and I’m very humbled by the tremendous amount of support out there.” She went on to say she believes Democrats have “a responsibility to remain focused on the midterms” rather than individual political ambitions, though the caveat did little to dampen speculation about her future plans.

Karl also asked whether Ocasio-Cortez would consider a Senate run in New York in 2028, when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is up for reelection. Rather than rule that out either, the congresswoman answered simply that “anything is possible at this juncture,” leaving open the door to a primary challenge against her own party’s top Senate leader.

The comments come on the heels of a University of New Hampshire Granite State poll that found Ocasio-Cortez leading the field of potential 2028 Democratic presidential contenders, ahead of establishment names such as former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. Although New Hampshire no longer hosts the first official Democratic primary, the state has long served as an early bellwether for candidate strength, and her showing there has fueled talk that the 36-year-old congresswoman could mount a serious campaign.

This is not the first time Ocasio-Cortez has teased the idea. In July, while campaigning in Michigan for Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, she told Politico, “I mean, I can’t say that I’ve ruled it out.” That remark came during a swing through several states in which Ocasio-Cortez has been stumping for a wave of democratic socialist-aligned candidates in this year’s primaries, many of whom have pulled off upset wins against establishment-backed Democrats.

Vice President JD Vance weighed in on the speculation in June, telling “The Michael Knowles Show” that if he had to name the front-runner for the 2028 Democratic nomination today, “it’s got to be AOC.” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, himself a democratic socialist who won his race with Ocasio-Cortez’s backing, told the New York Times in July that he was “excited to see what decision she makes” about a potential run.

Ocasio-Cortez has spent much of the past year crisscrossing the country with Sanders on what the pair have billed as a “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, rallying supporters around calls for a wealth tax and Medicare for All. The tour has fueled comparisons between Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders, who is widely seen as having passed the torch of the party’s democratic socialist movement to the younger congresswoman after falling short in consecutive presidential primaries.

Ocasio-Cortez is also expected to be a leading contender for the formal endorsement of the Democratic Socialists of America heading into 2028, though the organization has reportedly seen internal disagreement over whether to issue an early endorsement ahead of its usual biennial convention, currently scheduled for the summer of 2027.

At a Chicago event in May with Democratic strategist David Axelrod, Ocasio-Cortez offered a characteristically expansive answer when asked directly about her political ambitions. “What’s funny is they assume my ambition is a title or a seat,” she said. “My ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country.” The answer, while short on specifics, did nothing to quiet chatter that she is laying the groundwork for a national campaign.

Ocasio-Cortez’s continued refusal to rule out a run comes as the Democratic Party grapples with a broader identity crisis following disappointing results in recent national elections. Progressive candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America have notched a string of primary victories this cycle, most notably Mamdani’s win in the New York City mayoral race, which has been widely interpreted as evidence that the party’s energized base is pulling it further left, even as some strategists warn that trend could prove costly in general elections.

Ocasio-Cortez has also worked to soften some of her more polarizing past positions as she eyes a potential national campaign. During the ABC interview, she distanced herself from rhetoric she embraced in 2020, saying, “Rhetoric in that time is not rhetoric that we would use today.” She approvingly cited a viral post from New York City Council member Chi Ossé, who mocked his own past posts as “crazy,” a comment widely read as an acknowledgment that some 2020-era progressive messaging has become a liability.

She was first elected to Congress in 2018 after a stunning primary upset over longtime incumbent Rep. David Crowley, a victory that made her, at the time, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and turned her into a national progressive icon almost overnight. In the years since, she has become one of the most recognizable and polarizing figures in American politics, admired by the party’s left flank and frequently targeted by Republicans as a symbol of what they describe as the Democratic Party’s drift toward socialism.

Republicans have already signaled they intend to use Ocasio-Cortez’s national profile and record of past statements, including her past support for a 70 percent top marginal tax rate and comments suggesting no individual should be allowed to accumulate a billion dollars, as a cudgel against Democratic candidates up and down the ballot this November, regardless of whether she ultimately runs in 2028.

For now, Ocasio-Cortez insists her focus remains on this year’s midterms rather than her own political future. But with polling showing her as the clear front-runner among prospective 2028 candidates and a growing chorus of Democrats publicly speculating about her plans, few in either party expect the questions about a presidential run to fade anytime soon.

Whether she ultimately chooses to run for president, challenge Schumer for his Senate seat, or seek reelection to the House remains unclear. What is clear is that Ocasio-Cortez, once dismissed by critics as a fringe figure within her own party, now sits at the center of the conversation about the Democratic Party’s future direction heading into the next presidential cycle.
